Rock Band drums on PC: what connects, what plays and what does not

"Rock Band drums on PC" means two things. One is the plastic kit from the console game: it reaches a PC with an adapter that depends on its console, and two free games read it. The other is the songs: Rock Band song files play on a computer with any USB MIDI electronic kit, nothing to install. What a plastic kit cannot do is talk to a browser, and the reason is worth a paragraph. Claims about Clone Hero and YARG link to their wikis.

Which Rock Band kits are we talking about?

The Rock Band 1, 2 and 3 kits and the Beatles kit for PlayStation 2 and 3, Xbox 360 and Wii; the Rock Band 4 kits for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One; the Portable kit; the Pro cymbal add-ons; and the ION Drum Rocker. They are game controllers: each pad is a button, and the cymbal kits tell a cymbal from a pad with button combinations. That one fact decides everything below.

How do Rock Band drums connect to a PC?

It depends on the console the kit was made for. From the YARG wiki's hardware tables, which describe Windows:

  • Rock Band 1 kits (PlayStation 2 and 3, Xbox 360, Wii): "plug it in and rock", no adapter.
  • Rock Band 2, 3 and Beatles kits: "don't forget your dongle": the Xbox 360 wireless adapter, or the PlayStation and Wii kits' own receivers.
  • Rock Band 4 kits for Xbox One: the official Xbox wireless adapter, and for Clone Hero the RB4InstrumentMapper program (Windows; no equivalent for Mac), which presents the kit as a virtual controller through ViGEmBus.
  • Rock Band 4 kits for PlayStation 4: Bluetooth; without extra software you cannot map pads and cymbals at the same time, so the Clone Hero wiki points at a remapper called Minatsuki on Windows.
  • MIDI Pro Adapter: treat it like a Rock Band kit; if you have the choice, plug the e-kit straight in over MIDI instead.

Wired Xbox 360 controllers do not work on Mac or Linux, and PlayStation 3 and Wii kits are "likely to not work on Linux" without extra steps; whether a given kit works on a Mac is not stated.

Which games on PC read a Rock Band kit?

  • Clone Hero. Rock Band 3's Pro Drums layout is "the primary format that Clone Hero supports"; Expert+ is the 2x Kick modifier; accents and ghosts have no effect on a plastic kit, because only MIDI e-kits report velocity.
  • YARG. The hardware tables above are YARG's own; it plays 4-lane, Pro and 5-lane drums.
  • Fortnite Festival documents a MIDI Controller tab for e-kits and lists the Rock Band 4 kits per platform; see the Fortnite Festival guide.

Why can a browser app not read a Rock Band kit?

Because of what reaches the computer. A plastic kit, with or without a mapper, arrives as a game controller; browsers expose controllers through the Gamepad API. A MIDI kit arrives as MIDI; browsers expose that through Web MIDI. WebEDrums reads Web MIDI only, because a MIDI note carries the one thing a game needs from a drummer that a button cannot: how hard you hit, plus which zone of which pad. The MIDI Pro Adapter converts in the wrong direction, from a MIDI kit into a controller. So, with a Rock Band kit, the PC options are Clone Hero and YARG; with any USB MIDI kit, everything on this site applies, including the connection guide.

Can I play Rock Band songs on an electronic kit?

Yes, if you have the files. Rock Band customs come as Xbox 360 CON packages, which YARG and WebEDrums open directly from a folder; Clone Hero needs them converted first (Nautilus, Onyx). The drum charts guide covers where the custom-song scene publishes. Official Rock Band downloadable songs belong to the console account that bought them; the charts you can play on a computer are the community's.

What goes wrong with a Rock Band kit, and what to do

  • Cymbals trigger the kick (Xbox 360 kits): a default-mapping issue; unbind 2x Kick if no second pedal is connected.
  • Pro Drums with two cymbals: Clone Hero cannot toggle individual cymbals; the workaround is the "5 Lane Drums" controller setting, which trades one pad for cymbal use.
  • Xbox One kit not detected: check the official receiver, the ViGEmBus driver and the firmware note in RB4InstrumentMapper's README.
